Inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1997, General Dennis J. Reimer is from Medford, Oklahoma, and was born in 1939. Reimer graduated from the United States Military Academy, now known as West Point, in 1962 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant following his graduation.
Reimer completed a course on field artillery at Fort Sill before training for the Army Rangers and Airborne from 1962 to 1963. In 1963, he served in the 20th Artillery, 5th Infantry Division. Reimer was promoted to First Lieutenant while serving as an assistant battalion advisor for the Advisory Team 60, Unites States Military Assistance in Vietnam in 1965. He was named the Executive Officer and S-3 of 2nd Battalion, 4th Artillery, 9th Infantry in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. From 1976 to 1978 Reimer was the Commandant of the Training Command, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. Reimer traveled to Europe and commanded the Division Artillery, 8th Infantry. In 1982, he returned home to Oklahoma as the Deputy Assistant Commandant of the Field Artillery Center and School at Fort Sill. He returned to Fort Carson from 1988 to 1990, where he commanded the 4th Infantry Division.
Reimer served two tours in Vietnam and served in Korea as the Chief of Staff, Combined Field Army and the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Training. Reimer worked in the Pentagon as aide-de-camp to the Army Chief of Staff. His title was the Deputy Chief of Staff of Operations and Plans for the Army during Desert Storm and as the Army Vice Chief of Staff. Reimer served as the Army Chief of Staff from 1995 to 1999. Reimer retired from active duty in 1999. He is also a member of the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame.
